Computer science students at Florida Memorial University — South Florida’s only Historically Black University or College (HBCU) — use outdated and basic Dell computers to learn about artificial intelligence (AI).
Meanwhile, other students nearby at larger universities like Florida International University and the University of Miami dabble with cutting-edge servers with graphics processing units (GPUs) to do the same.
That inequality is exactly what JPMorgan Chase and Florida Memorial want to eliminate. On Thursday, the bank donated $1 million to the university to expand its technology programs.
“In a global world that relies on technological innovations to keep people connected and drive breakthroughs in fields like health care and manufacturing, we must prioritize helping young people access opportunities, and gain the right skills and experiences. That’s why today I’m beyond thrilled to announce that JPMorgan Chase is making a $1 million commitment to FMU,” said Tim Berry, the bank’s global head of corporate responsibility and mid-Atlantic region chairman, during a press conference at the university’s Miami Gardens campus.
Starting immediately, Florida Memorial will use the funds to give students more scholarships, hire more staffers and train them better, modernize classrooms and other facilities, and purchase newer equipment, said FMU’s President Jaffus Hardrick, who thanked JPMorgan for believing in his institution.
As Berry delivered the news, applause and cheers erupted from audience members. Among them sat Jabulani Mzee, a student at Florida Memorial, who later told the Herald the money “means a ton.”
“We do the most with the least. We don’t even have GPUs, which is what allows you to play with AI,” said Mzee, 30. “So this grant definitely represents a brand new future of us.”

JPMorgan donated the million as part of a $10 million grant it pledged in 2022 to Tech Equity Miami — a $100 million five-year philanthropic initiative focused on growing the technology sector in Miami and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups.
Leigh-Ann Buchanan, co-founder of Tech Equity Miami, emphasized at the event the effort to level the playing field.
One quarter of African Americans who earn science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) degrees do so at HBCUs, but these schools, she said, are “systemically under-invested in.”
“They are overlooked. They’re often underestimated. And we need to invest more in our HBCUs,” she said.
She also added that computer science students only represent about 8% of the current student body at FMU — or about 76 students — but that she wants to raise that to at least 20%.
FMU will invest the donation in three programs — computer science, information systems and cyber security — but the university could also use it to improve other tech-related studies like biology radiation, engineering and aviation.
“In the future, everything becomes technology,” said Samuel Darko, FMU’s interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. “We want our students to see it from that angle.”
Miami-Dade County’s Commission Chair, Oliver Gilbert, also spoke at the presser and repeated John F. Kennedy’s famous quote: “A rising tide lifts all boats,” meaning that if any American does better, all Americans do better.
“STEM and tech? That’s the new tide,” Gilbert said. “And this is helping Florida Memorial build a boat factory. This influences a community, shapes a county and moves a country forward.”

J.P. Morgan Securities business to open in Miami for the first time
JPMorgan Chase announced today that it is expanding its J.P. Morgan Securities business into Miami and has significantly grown its Private Bank in South Florida by adding 15 new advisors.
In addition, the firm has promoted seven South Florida executives to new roles across its Consumer Banking, Middle Market Banking and Business Banking businesses.
J.P. Morgan Securities
The firm is expanding its J.P. Morgan Securities business into Miami with an initial team of six financial advisors who provide investment management services, including asset management, estate and retirement planning. The team will add more advisors in the future.
J.P. Morgan hired William Krauss from Morgan Stanley to lead the team and added veteran advisor Sergio Akselrad, who spent 27 years at Goldman Sachs in South Florida. In addition, four experienced advisors – Carlos Bonzon, Mario Lamar, Jonathan Madrigano and Rich Comeau – are relocating from New York to Miami to build out the team.
“Thanks to the work the team has done here, the firm has a strong presence in this important wealth market across all lines of business,” said Chris Harvey, CEO of J.P. Morgan Securities. “We see a great opportunity for J.P. Morgan Securities to join in Miami to compliment the firm’s offering.”
J.P. Morgan Private Bank
J.P. Morgan has significantly grown its Private Bank in South Florida this year by hiring 15 new advisors – including seven this month. The team provides wealth management advice, strategies and services to successful individuals, family offices, foundations and endowments from its local offices in Miami and Palm Beach.

Middle Market Banking
After more than 37 years in the banking industry, South Florida banking veteran and local head of Chase’s Middle Market Banking business Guillermo Castillo has decided to retire. As a result, the firm has promoted the following executives to lead its Middle Market Banking business across the state and locally in South Florida.
Diego Gordillo has been named the new head of Middle Market Banking in Florida. Based in Miami, he leads an established team of professionals across the state who serve businesses with $20 million to $500 million in annual revenues. Gordillo – who grew up in Miami – is relocating back to South Florida from New York where he previously led J.P. Morgan’s North American Foreign Exchange Sales teams for Middle Market and Business Banking clients.

Daniel Salazar grew up in Maracay, a small village outside of Caracas, Venezuela, before moving to Miami at age 12. Since then, he has called the area home. He began his career and is raising a family in the Magic City.
Today, leading JPMorgan Chase’s Middle Market Banking & Specialized Industries for South Florida is a full-circle moment for the 38-year-old, who remembers seeing people in formal suits go in and out of banks as a child in Venezuela, curious about what their jobs entailed.
Why did you go into the banking industry? It dates back to being a young person in Venezuela. I saw bankers, the institutions and buildings of a bank as something to look at like “wow.” Later in life, as I got older, I began to understand the impact that a bank has on individuals, families, communities, businesses – and a country even. That’s what made it really interesting to me: how a good banker can have such a meaningful impact for those that he or she works with.
What is a recent goal you've set for yourself? Being more meaningful and impactful with my time. One of the thing's I'm most passionate about outside of work is education. I joined and sit on the board of an organization called Year Up, for the South Florida chapter, so that's one place where I can have a bigger community impact.
What is one of your proudest achievements? My family. It's not something that I created on my own, but something born out of love between me and my wife. And as a result of that love and hard work, we have two amazing children, Sebastian and Samantha. And that is something that gives me fuel each and every day.
What is your best advice for future bankers? Really understand early in your career everything that the bank or financial institution that you may be a part of or want to work for does. i think that, unless you're in the industry or cover the industry, people don't really understand all of the things that a bank does. You don't realize the amount of different opportunities that the bank presents. So If you're able to identify something that you're passionate about in the industry, the rest is history, as they say.
What is one of the biggest obstacles your industry has overcome? In recent history, we've been faced with a couple in different ways. The recession that we experienced in the late 2000s was something interesting to navigate through because it was unprecedented in many ways. But more recently, the pandemic. We have a playbook for recessions and understand that economic cycles happen. But the pandemic is something that wasn't in the playbook. And as we thought of our clients, and how the different companies would survive working from home, it was uniquely challenging.
What are your hobbies? The family hobby revolves around soccer. My son plays, and I, myself, used to play – and still try to every once in awhile. My second hobby would be eating and cooking. For me, cooking is not necessarily a stress reliever, but for when I don't want to think about anything else.
What is your favorite food? That depends on the day of the week. In food or in cooking, I appreciate either simplicity or complexity. To elaborate more, a bone-in ribeye with the only thing added to it is salt. Because if you think about it, it's a piece of protein and all it needs is salt.
What is your favorite TV show with a banking/finance theme? Showtime's "Billions"
If you could meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Simón Bolívar. Because bringing independence to as many countries as he did in South America is one reason. But the thought of him accomplishing this on horseback is mind-boggling to me.
What is one of your favorite South Florida spots? It would have to be a restaurant. Either Sports Grill, for their chicken wings, or Ghee, a Miami Indian restaurant.
