Your top choice for compassionateIn-Home Care in Parkland, FL

It's often said that the golden years of your life are the most enjoyable. For most older adults in the U.S., it's a time to unwind, reflect, and live in the comfort of familiar surroundings. And that's how it should be - most senior citizens in America worked hard to build a better economy, serve their communities, and raise their families. Shouldn't they be able to age with grace and dignity at home?

The answer is undoubtedly "yes," but as seniors age, they sometimes need assistance to live independently. Unfortunately, many older adults are unable to rely on adult children for help due to busy schedules, a lack of expertise, or both. That's where Mind & Mobility's home care in Parkland, FL begins to make a lot of sense.

Our in-home care services cater to those who want to stay in their homes as they age but require ongoing care that their loved ones cannot provide. Nowadays, most seniors prefer to live away from long-term care facilities and closer to their home where they feel most at ease.

If you or your senior loved one wants to thrive in their own house and avoid care facilities, in-home care is an effective, safe way to give family and friends the care they need when they need it the most.

The Mind & Mobility Difference

Mind & Mobility is a home care agency that takes pride in helping seniors enjoy life at home with grace and comfort. One of the biggest reasons why so many seniors and their families choose us is that our senior caregivers in Parkland, FL, do more than just change bedsheets and prepare meals. They make it a point to provide compassionate care and connect with patients on a personal level.

Instead of eliminating independence from our senior population in Florida, we believe in maximizing it - a goal that's not always supported by assisted living facilities and nursing homes. In fact, those locations are often overpriced, understaffed, and known for the spread of disease. Senior care from Mind & Mobility provides a more emotionally and financially relieving option, whether you need a little help around the house or more involved services like companion care or dementia care.

While we take pride in providing compassionate caregiving services for seniors at home, we also offer clients free access to our Mind & Mobility Homecare Center in South Florida. Here, your senior can receive treatment from therapists who are experts in physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Our therapists work collaboratively in a supportive environment, taking into consideration the client's needs and concerns. They combine their expertise with the latest research in their fields to deliver cutting-edge, evidence-based services. With unlimited access to one-on-one sessions, our therapists' top priority is to help seniors live and age gracefully at home without having to relocate to an assisted living facility.

What is Senior Care in Parkland, FL?

Many older adults in the United States prefer to age at home, as it offers a sense of security, comfort, and familiarity. According to an AARP report, three out of four adults aged 50 and above wish to stay in their homes and communities as they age.

However, as adults approach their 60s and 70s, some may require assistance around the house, especially when family members are too busy or live far away. The truth is that the natural process of aging can make it challenging to continue living at home. Simple tasks like running errands become more difficult due to mobility issues. Preparing healthy meals and keeping track of medications and appointments can also become a challenge. Safety becomes a concern, and family members may worry about the well-being of their loved ones.

In these situations, in-home care is often a perfect fit. It allows seniors to enjoy personal independence while also receiving trustworthy assistance from a trained caregiver.

Mind & Mobility provides a comprehensive range of home care services to help seniors stay healthy while they receive the help they need to remain independent. If you have a senior loved one who needs some extra help to stay happy and healthy, giving them the gift of senior care is one of the best ways to show your love, even from afar.

Companion Care You Can Count On

Aging in place refers to the practice of aging adults living in their homes as they grow old. Studies show that around 77% of retirees prefer to stay in their homes for as long as possible, and home care can be an excellent way to bridge the gap between receiving elder care and staying at home.

Allowing your aging loved ones to maintain their independence is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. This can contribute to their overall health and well-being, as opposed to a living facility where they may feel powerless and depressed. Unfortunately, these facilities often take away a senior's ability to do simple things like cooking for themselves, scheduling visits with family and friends, and even bathing in the comfort of their own homes.

Home care in Parkland, FL, including companion care services, is designed to provide both medical and non-medical solutions that your senior needs in order to maintain their independence. That way, your senior doesn't have to destabilize their life or adjust to a new way of living away from home.

Take a Break with RespiteCare Services from Mind & Mobility

Taking care of a senior loved one can be a tiring and overwhelming task, particularly if the caregiver is employed full-time and has other responsibilities to handle. Taking care of an older adult in such a situation can result in caregiver burnout, which can lead to a decline in the quality of care provided and even illness. To combat this issue, many adult caregivers choose respite care as a solution instead of full-time home care in Parkland, FL.

According to AARP, more than 53 million adults in the United States provide care to someone aged 50 or older. Unfortunately, many of these caregivers experience stress, fatigue, and even depression.

Respite care services offer a short-term break to family members and unpaid caregivers from their caregiving duties. This is a crucial service that benefits both seniors and their caregivers and can be arranged for a few hours or even several days, depending on their requirements.

What are the Benefits of Respite Care from Mind & Mobility?

Respite care services can have a significantly positive impact on the health of your elderly loved one, as well as your own. Whether it's for an extended period of time or just a few hours a week, respite care can help ease the burden of caregiving.

Taking some time off for yourself may seem selfish at first, but it's crucial to recharge your batteries to be able to continue providing care. Taking a short (or longer-term) break can also improve the overall quality of your care. Plus, professional respite care services offer your senior an opportunity to learn from and engage with a compassionate caregiver from Mind & Mobility.

Three Hurdles That Family Caregivers Face

Caring for your aging parents can be a fulfilling act of love. As you reminisce about the care they gave you while growing up, you now have the opportunity to return the favor. However, providing care for loved ones can be challenging. It's important to anticipate the obstacles you may face and learn how to manage them to protect your own health and well-being.

Here are three of the toughest challenges that family caregivers have to face when caring for their senior parents or loved ones.

Enough Support

Not Enough Support

It's common to feel like you're carrying the majority of the burden when it comes to taking care of your aging parents. However, assuming that you are solely responsible for their care can be overwhelming and cause strain in other relationships. It's important to remember that caring for someone else is not a one-person job. Attempting to do so can lead to burnout, depression, and other serious health issues. It can also negatively impact the level of care your parents receive.

Enough Sleep

Not Enough Sleep

Interrupted sleep can be a problem for older adults whose circadian clock has shifted, leading them to wake up more frequently throughout the night. It can also be a result of stress and worry. If dementia is a factor, you may need to stay alert due to sundowning and wandering. Those tasks can be difficult and require a sharp mind that has had plenty of rest. In fact, getting enough sleep is crucial for your ability to provide the best care for your parents, as well as for your own physical and emotional well-being.

Enough Privacy

Not Enough Privacy

Sharing living space with your parents can compromise both your physical and emotional privacy. This is especially true if one or both of your parents have dementia, which can cause them to feel afraid or disoriented when you're not around. At the same time, your parents may also find it difficult to maintain their privacy while under your care.

That begs the question - how can you conquer the challenges that most family caregivers face on a daily basis?

In-Home Care in Parkland, FL Helps Alleviate Your Burden

Mind & Mobility's in-home caregivers can be there to help you ensure the best care for your parents and a healthier life balance for yourself. Taking a break from caregiving is not just a great idea; it's essential.

Our respite care services offer you regular breaks from caregiving, which allows you to take care of yourself while enriching your parents' lives. We provide opportunities for socialization and engaging activities, along with the necessary support to ensure safety and comfort. You can rest easy knowing that your parents are in the best of hands while you take a break.

PARKLAND, FL- The City of Parkland hosted a presentation by the South Florida Wildlife Center last week, which could lead to a partnership with the Fort Lauderdale-based nonprofit organization.

The South Florida Wildlife Center is the largest Wildlife Hospital in the State of Florida, whose mission is to "protect wildlife through rescue, rehabilitation, and education."

The Fort Lauderdale location of the South Florida Wildlife Center took in over 9,000 animals in 2023 alone, including mammals, reptiles, and birds. The Wildlife Center aims to rehabilitate and release animals back in into the wild if possible, but often times animals are injured or damaged in some capacity and would not be able to survive in the wild, thus making the South Florida Wildlife Center their permanent home.

"We want to rescue and rehabilitate all of the sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife. The goal is to release them back into the wild," says Alessandra Medri, Executive Director of the South Florida Wildlife Center.

Medri says that while 79% of their animals come from Broward County, 21% are brought to the Center from around the State of Florida.

"We have had people coming to us from Ocala, from the West Coast, from the Panhandle, just to bring animals to us. Why? Because we have the best doctors. For example, we can perform a surgery on a bald eagle. We are adjacent to the Everglades, so we get exposure to a tremendous amount of biodiversity."

The partnership between the City of Parkland and the South Florida Wildlife Center would involve a 6-acre parcel of City-owned land at the northwest corner of Loxahatchee Road in Parkland, which is perfectly adjacent to the Everglades.

The location would likely end up hosting at two buildings on the property, which would include a small visitor's center and the wildlife center building itself. The combined square footage of the buildings would be around 12,000 square feet on the six acre property.

"This is an exciting opportunity to consider," said Parkland City Commissioner Simeon Brier. "We've been seeking a valuable use for this piece of property, and this could be a partnership that would be beneficial to the Parkland community, our residents and young people, and the natural environment as well."

By Bryan Boggiano

Starting from October 30, the Loxahatchee Road improvement projects will result in road closures that are anticipated to last until at least February 2024.

During this period, the section of Loxahatchee Road between University Drive and Parkside Drive will be closed for a minimum of four months and potentially longer.

The news comes ahead of an October 23 Florida Department of Transportation virtual meeting scheduled between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Registration is open.

According to the city, road closures are a part of a larger-scale project to improve safety, increase accessibility to Arthur R. Marshall National Wildlife Refuge, and make ADA-related improvements.

The project is a collaboration between multiple agencies, including FDOT, the county, the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the city. Parkland’s cost for the project is less than $2 million out of the $37 million total cost. The city’s portion of the project is about one out of roughly six miles of the total project.

Project components include widening travel lanes, installing bike lanes in both directions, installing a sidewalk on the road’s southern end, inserting a new guardrail on the road’s northern end, and placing medians as a means to calm traffic.

There will also be three roundabouts at Parkside Drive, University Drive, and Nob Hill Road. Project components do not include adding any lanes.

Loxahatchee Road’s construction is set to begin before year’s end and continue through at least 2027. Through that period, partial and complete road closures are expected, with most full road closures occurring through mid-2025.

At that time, night work is expected between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. except for places east of Parkside Drive. Loxahatchee Road will remain open for local traffic and for neighborhoods where the roadway serves as the only access route.

At an October 18 city commission meeting, Mayor Rich Walker echoed these points, warning that further road closures are likely and recommending only local traffic use Loxahatchee Road.

Walker said he acknowledges it will be a long three years for residents, but he said residents and commuters have to adapt.

“I know that’s a tough pill to swallow, but that’s the one we have to take,” Walker said.

PARKLAND, FL- Turning 101 in November, Aston Gardens resident Shirley K. has lived an astonishingly exciting and eccentric life. Born in Philadelphia to a family of singers, talent in the entertainment industry was practically an inherited trait. She had a cousin who sang at the Metropolitan, a niece that entered the Miss America Pageant, and her own accomplishments have proven just as extraordinary. After all, she is a true jack of all trades.

“I have friends all over and I sang everywhere,” she said. “I went to work in so many places and did so many things in my life I can’t even begin to tell," said Kruger.

Despite being born in Philadelphia, Shirley spent most of her life in the Bronx where she immersed herself in the arts. She even recalls entering a Shirley Temple contest when she was young, in which she was the third runner-up.

Her love for the entertainment industry was such a vital part of her life, that it continued to define her even into adulthood. With a great vocal range, she was afforded an abundance of opportunities as a singer, something she undoubtedly took advantage of, performing just about anywhere and everywhere she could. Her performances most often involved singing semi-classical and popular tunes.

In addition to her love for music, Shirley was also largely interested in fashion. At one point in her life, this interest even manifested itself in the ownership of a very large clothing store.

“I had a clothing store called Shirley’s Place, and it was the biggest store that you can find in Florida,” she said. “I was very well known. People would get off the plane and come straight to my store because I had all the clothes.”

Unfortunately, problems with her landlord eventually led to the store’s closing, but fashion nevertheless persisted as a very prominent part of her life. Even today, Shirley still takes great pride in her personal style and is rarely seen around Aston Gardens in the same outfit twice.

In retirement, Shirley owned and lived in a beautiful villa. However, life there was permanently disrupted when she was robbed. After this incident, fear of something similar occurring again, led to her having a considerable amount of trouble sleeping from that point onwards.

Luckily, her son and daughter-in-law—whom she loves dearly—were there to support her through this hardship. Their insistence that she move into Aston Gardens, so that she didn’t have to live in constant fear, is the reason she’s there today.

Now, Shirley spends her days enjoying quality time with the amazing friends she’s made, playing games, and generally keeping herself entertained. Additionally, her son is a Parkland resident, and he is always nearby and able to visit.

Shirley K. is one of Parkland and Aston Gardens' proud centenarian residents as she continues to enjoy and cherish all that life brings her as she looks towards her 101st Birthday in November.

By Bryan Boggiano

The Parkland City Commission approved a contract with Toll Brothers to purchase 21 acres to develop up to 52 luxury homes on the Former Heron Bay Golf Course.

The commission unanimously approved the $19,500,000 contract at their Aug. 16 meeting, setting the stage to increase development along 65 acres they purchased from the North Springs Improvement District in September 2022.

As part of the purchase, Toll Brothers will also receive an easement along Trails End for vehicle access.

The agreement also outlines multiple payment milestones. This includes $250,000 due within three days of the contract’s approval and an additional $750,000 due within three days of the due diligence period ending, which runs for 75 days after the second reading.

Toll Brothers will also pay the city $10,000 per month through a 15-month entitlement period, where they will seek necessary development approvals. The property’s closing ultimately depends on certain rezoning, plat, and site plan approvals.

According to the contract, if Toll Brothers do not apply for 30 building permits within five years, they will have to pay all impact fees for each housing unit approved, which is up to 52 homes. The contract also incentivizes Toll Brothers not to sell the land to another developer.

If Toll Brothers receive a purchasing offer from another developer, they will have seven business days to notify the city. Then, the city could purchase the property back, but only if they notify the developer within 30 days.

Closing will occur 30 days after Toll Brothers receives all development approvals.

The city commission welcomed the contract warmly, praising the hard work of city staff and Toll Brothers for making the agreement possible while looking forward to navigating the future of the Heron Bay development.

“This is certainly a huge positive step in taking control of our destiny,” said Mayor Rich Walker. “We still have a lot more to go, but I’m looking forward to the outcome of what’s going to happen at Heron Bay.”

The contract received a positive reception from Commissioner Bob Mayersohn, the only commission member who voted against the final purchase on first reading, and the ranking offer that placed them as the city’s first-choice developer.

“They have stepped up, they have come to the table…,” he said. “I will be approving this.”

Ultimately, Walker approved the contract purchase remotely due to being sick. Mayersohn seconded, and the commission approved the contract unanimously.

In a statement, Toll Brothers Southeast Florida District President Alex Martin said, “Toll Brothers is honored and very excited to receive approval from Parkland City Commissioners for our bid on the remaining phase of Heron Bay. We are committed to bringing our distinctive architecture, unrivaled choice, and extraordinary customer experience to this prestigious location in Parkland.”

He added his appreciation of the trust that the city has placed in them to build the final phase of this very special community.
