PALM BEACH GARDENS — The captain setting sail on a luxury super yacht in the new season of “Below Deck” is one of the city’s own.

Kerry Titheradge of P a lm Beach Gardens sailed off the coast of Grenada, a small island in the Caribbean, for six weeks while Bravo filmed the show’s 11th season. Its first episode premiered on Feb. 5.

The reality series follows the lives of a crew working on a yacht, the wealthy guests who charter it and the drama that arises throughout.

Titheradge previously manned a boat for one of the show’s spinoffs called “Below Deck Adventure.” It premiered in November 2022 and followed the crew as they navigated Norway’s water channels.

The 'Below Deck' captain who replaced Captain Lee: Who is Kerry Titheradge?

The 48-year-old was born in Brisbane, Australia. He has replaced Lee Rosbach, the captain who has been on “Below Deck” since its 2013 debut.

Titheradge’s love for the ocean has taken him around the world to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific Northwest. He has worked on boats for about three decades and yachts specifically for 20 years.

Titheradge moved to West Palm Beach in 2004 when he captained a boat based in North Palm Beach. He relocated to Palm Beach Gardens in 2014 because of the city’s A-rated public schools, where he enrolled his two children.

When he isn’t captaining a boat, he spends his time practicing jiujitsu with his son, taking his daughter for coffee dates, fostering Husky dogs and hydrofoiling, which involves riding on a board that lifts up above water.

He owns a company called Yachting Concepts, which offers yacht management, captaining and engineering services.

When did Captain Kerry start working on boats?

Titheradge got his start working on boats when his original career plan took an unexpected turn.

Titheradge grew up in Central Queensland, the outback of Australia, so he never learned to surf as a kid and he didn’t at first imagine himself working on the water.

When he was 18 years old, the company where he had an apprenticeship with hopes of becoming an electrician closed down.

“I ended up just doing whatever I could,” Titheradge said. “I walked down the street and knocked on every door until someone gave me a job.”

That eventually led him to an interview for a deckhand job on a parasailing boat, which tows water-skiers who float in the air with a parachute. He did whatever he could to get the gig.

“(After the interview), I wouldn’t leave,” Titheradge said. “I asked, ‘Can I rinse the boat?’ and ‘Can I dry the boat?’ I just kept adding jobs. It just felt right, and they gave me the job.”

Thus, his decades-long career began.

He worked on parasailing boats, then moved on to water taxis, ferries, landing barges, tug boats, dredges and yachts. He has worked as a deckhand, steward, engineer, captain and first officer.

What does he love most about Bravo's show, 'Below Deck?'

Titheradge loves that the show lets people see what life working on a yacht is like, especially with a crew whose members come from different places around the world.

“The cameras disappear pretty quickly for me, and I’m just doing my job,” Titheradge said. “We’re showing people aspects of the industry that people don’t know much about, but are very interested in.”

He describes his captaining style as “firm, but fair.”

“I give all of my crew members respect,” Titheradge said. “If they take my kindness as a weakness, they’re gone. But if they’re having a tough time (mentally), I want to be able to help them. Mental health is very important to me.”

Titheradge said he is grateful for the fanbase and platform that “Below Deck” has given him, which is something he never thought he would have.

He wants to use his following for good.

During the Christmas season, he raised funds and collected gift donations for families with single parents. He is also an advocate for pet adoption and shares information about fostering dogs on his Instagram page.

Has he experienced any scary moments on the waters?

While out on the water, Titheradge has faced hurricanes, fires and medical emergencies among guests.

One unexpected storm raged in the middle of the night while he was cruising off the coast of Italy about 14 years ago. Lightning struck the boat and shut off its navigation, light, radio and radar equipment.

The storm lasted for hours and tossed the boat all the way to the coast of Croatia. Titheradge said he didn’t have time to get scared because he was so focused on the job at hand: avoiding a capsize.

“If you let fear ride your decision-making, you make mistakes,” Titheradge said. “It’s about planning properly, clear communication and executing it.”

How to watch ‘Below Deck’ Season 11?

New episodes of Season 11 run on Bravo at 9 p.m. ET Mondays.

If you missed an episode on cable, they release on Peacock the day after they air. Previous seasons of "Below Deck” and its spinoffs are also on the streaming service.

The exact number of episodes has not yet been revealed, but there are usually around 15 to 17 episodes per season, each around an hour long.

Palm Beach Gardens asks voters to approve 5 annexations

The Palm Beach County City Council unanimously approved five different annexations east of Interstate 95 Wednesday night as overwhelming majority at the meeting opposed the move. PALM BEACH GARDENS — About 5,400 voters in Palm Beach County will decide if they want to join the city of Palm Beach Gardens.

Palm Beach Gardens City Council on Wednesday night approved five different annexation plans, bringing about 3,500 pieces of property into city limits. The city still needs a majority of registered voters in each zone to approve the plan in five different elections likely scheduled for March 2024.

City staff said the plan would allow the town to increase its tax base, which could potentially allow it to lower the city's millage rate while being able to maintain services for the town.

But dozens of people spoke out against the plan to annex an area called "Zone 1" at Palm Beach Garden's regularly scheduled council meeting. A smaller group protested against the plan before the meeting.

Nancy Lodise, who was one of the protesters, said she is concerned Palm Beach Gardens will eventually force her home to switch from a septic tank to a sewer system. She estimates the expenses could create a financial hardship.

"I'm on a fixed income. I'm retired," Lodise said. "$30,000 to $50,000 would be a financial burden."

Joe Deangelo said he doesn't see the benefit from joining the city of Palm Beach Gardens. He said he believes the city is doing this to help themselves.

"They are trying to take our tax dollars," Deangelo said. "That's the only thing they want"

To fight against the proposal, some people in the Hidden Key community hired a lawyer named Nicholas Gieseler. He said Zone 1 is illegal because the city engineered a zone to dilute the voices of other areas, similar to a political gerrymander.

"The only reason they did this is because they know the communities they really want in their city aren't going to vote for this annexation," Gieseler said. "So they had to lump them in."

The city disagrees because a consultant, whom it hired to conduct a required feasibility study, found the area to meet the compactness definition. Multiple council members approved the annexation plan because they said a vote would allow all people to make an opinion on the issue.

Palm Beach Gardens' website describes the plan as a "win-win" proposition for property owners. It estimated people's taxes would lower if their home's assessed value is at or lower than $411,250, which it said applies to 70% of properties in the five areas.

WPTV received the city's data from a records request and found the percentage differs based on the zone. Specifically, a higher percentage of properties seeing their taxes increase are within Zone 2 and Zone 3.

Amid Palm Beach Gardens' plan to annex several areas, North Palm Beach is trying to annex some of the same properties.

Celeste Colliton, who owns one of those homes in a community called Hidden Key with her husband, has a sign outside her home urging people to vote against annexation. She said she’s frustrated council sent the issue to the ballot box after an overwhelming majority spoke against the project tonight.

"I'm not surprised they passed the referendum to be on the ballot," Colliton said. “They listen to us, they say. But they don’t care what we say.”

WPTV reached out to North Palm Beach Village Manager Chuck Huff, who said he had nothing further to add.

Peter Banting, who also lives in Palm Beach County, said in October he supports the project because his property in Zone Five is completely enclosed by Palm Beach Gardens. He said he's looking forward to receiving assistance to fix roads, which his neighborhood is currently performing rather than a local government.

"We went out and poured asphalt into the potholes," Banting said. "It was the only way we could get maintenance of any kind."

A vote would determine the outcome for each zone, which will likely occur on March 19, 2024.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. —

The future home of TGL golf, a "prime-time golf league" founded by Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy, will be known as the SoFi Center.

The arena will be able to seat about 1,500 people at the Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens.

TMRW Sports says the SoFi Center will feature "a giant simulator screen powered by Full Swing technology measuring 64 feet high by 46 feet across, roughly 20 times the size of a standard simulator screen. Alongside the simulator inside the venue will be a dynamic short-game complex that includes three sand bunkers and three individual 15 feet x 27 feet Virtual Greens within a massive 3,800 square-foot putting surface."

It is set to open in January 2024, but those who live in the area are not as excited as some local sports fans.

“When we moved here, we realized the ball fields could eventually become buildings, labs, parking lots, or something; we never realized it would be an enterprise by some millionaire golfers,” Buddy Herrington said.

Herrington has lived in his Palm Beach Gardens home for the better part of four decades. His yard backs up to the construction.

“They have been working at all hours of the night," he said. "It’s not this noisy, but there is big machinery.”

He said people in their neighborhood are less worried about traffic and more concerned about potential flooding after experiencing a flood in 1995.

Palm Beach State College built a berm in 1997 and there has not been a flooding issue since.

“We want to make sure they have the proper drainage because now that they are building on it, there is going to be even more water that has to go somewhere other than the ground,” he said.

Palm Beach State College sent us the following statement addressing the concerns of Herrington and his neighbors:

"The safety of our community is always our priority. We appreciate the fact that residents expressed their concerns during community information sessions held recently at our Palm Beach Gardens campus and we have taken note of the issues.

The site is being developed in accordance with a permit for stormwater drainage approved and issued by the South Florida Water Management District. There have been no flooding issues throughout the construction process. The Civil Engineer for the TMRW Sports project has confirmed the existing stormwater management system provides the required water quality treatment and storm drainage.

The concerns of residents date back to major flooding that occurred in the neighborhood in 1995. The college constructed a Berm in 1997 to provide a barrier and there have been no major flooding issues since then."

"Palm Beach State College is proud to be the host location at our Palm Beach Gardens campus for the inaugural home and live broadcasting venue of the TGL, which will provide many benefits to the College and our students.

We’re most excited about the benefits that this historic partnership with TMRW Sports will bring to our students. For example, PBSC’s construction students will be touring the site in the next week as part of their learning experience. Students will have an opportunity to speak with TMRW Sports’ construction team, engineers, and project managers. There are also a number of technology internships being made available to our students, and a career fair planned in the fall, with job opportunities for local residents. This is in addition to guest lectures by renowned leaders in sports, entertainment and business, and use of the facility for college events. In addition, as a result of this partnership, PBSC is developing a curriculum on career pathways in AI and technology in sports management, marketing, entrepreneurship, retail, and project management."

PALM BEACH GARDENS – A gym with unusual features including a treadmill-lined movie theater and hula dance classes is set to open at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens.

The gym is poised to take over a 30,140-square-foot space that formerly housed Best Buy and sits just across the parking lot from apartments at the center. Best Buy moved to another space in the shopping plaza.

It would be the second EoS Fitness in Palm Beach County, with its other location off State Road 7 in suburban Boca Raton, and the 10th location in Florida. Pure Barre, which offers workouts using a ballet barre, is the only other fitness business at Legacy Place.

EoS Fitness offers exercise classes unlike those at other gyms

Legacy Place, the outdoor retail and residential complex with 384 multi-family units sold for $101 million in 2021 to Boca Raton-based Woolbright Development and Dallas-based Lone Star Funds.

The plaza at PGA Boulevard and Alternate State Road A1A did strong business after it opened in 2006 but has struggled to bring in customers amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of e-commerce. Many of its signature stores — such as Best Buy and Barnes & Noble — do much of their business online.

Since then, efforts to bring new tenants to the center have met with uneven results. EoS Fitness is expected to bring a new set of customers to the center.

The Palm Beach Gardens Planning and Zoning Board unanimously voted in mid-October to recommend the gym’s approval. The City Council is expected to vote to approve or deny it at its next meeting on Nov. 2.

Legacy Place has already updated their website directory, saying Eos Fitness is “coming soon.”

The gym offers personal trainers, yoga and cycling classes, and a backyard for its members to work out under the sun. Each gym also is equipped with a hot tub, sauna, massage chairs and indoor swimming pool. Membership fees at EoS Fitness start at $9.99 per month with an annual membership fee of $49.99.

“We are finding that many people have very specific fitness needs,” said Nicole Plunkett with Cotleur & Hearing, the agent representing the project. “EoS Fitness will complement not just the people who visit the center, but the residents as well.”

Legacy Place expects more restaurants, businesses to open soon

City planner Christopher Oftedal expressed concern over the future success of Legacy Place, saying that he drives past it often and gets the sense that it is “completely empty.” He still voted to recommend bringing EoS Fitness to the center.

“Is there any long-term strategy, or are we just kind of putting a Band-Aid on Legacy Place?” Oftedal asked at the mid-October meeting.

Amanda Kennedy-Sita, vice president of acquisitions at Woolbright Development, said that Legacy Place’s retail space is currently 70% occupied.

Kennedy-Sita hopes to achieve 90% occupancy by the end of the year. She expects two major restaurants, a coffee shop and other smaller “mom-and-pop” retail to come to Legacy Place by then.
