No doubt, that's a very impressive fact for some. This one might be bigger than that: Of the two chances to win a top prize for $25 million in the 500x the Cash Florida Lottery scratch-off game, one ticket was purchased at a Florida Publix.

What are the odds? And why did so many Publix locations in Florida produce million-dollar winners?

One organization that won't brag about the billion-dollar lottery wins from the Publix stores? Publix.

Over the years, a significant amount of Florida Lottery money was won through tickets sold at Publix (see below). However, the grocery store chain has a policy not to publicly comment on lottery wins. A notice on its corporate website states: "Publix does not participate in or promote lottery stories. The stores that sold the winning prizes don't advertise that fact either. Though there have been signs warning against the use of bicycles, skateboards or inline skates, signs about the store's pet policy and signs requesting unvaccinated customers wear a mask to curb the spread of COVID-19, there are no signs in Publix stores touting big jackpot wins.

A $25 million scratch-off ticket was purchased at Publix, 13650 Fiddlesticks Blvd., Fort Myers. Someone from Riverview made the drive to the Publix in Lee County, purchased a 500x the Cash Florida Lottery scratcher, and won the top prize. Maps show Riverview is about 121 miles north of Fort Myers. The mystery winner opted for a one-time lump sum of $20,560,000. The winner's identity has not been revealed by lottery officials − yet. In Florida, lottery winners cannot remain anonymous, per rules. The winner's name, residence, prize amount, where the ticket was purchased from and when are subject to publication. However, there is a grace period for lottery winners to be temporarily exempt from public disclosure.

Where was the other $25 million top prize from 500x the Cash purchased?

In June 2022, lottery officials announced George Demetriades of Bonita Springs won $25 million from his 500x the Cash scratch-off ticket. Demetriades appeared in May 2022 at the lottery's district office in Fort Myers and chose to receive his winnings as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $20,560,000, according to the lottery.

Demetriades bought his scratch-off from Circle K, 10460 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs. His winnings paid off for the store, too: Circle K received a $50,000 bonus commission for selling the golden ticket.

Amanda, a senior, is the first student in her school’s National Honor Society with a cognitive disability.

From being shy and introverted as a freshman, her teacher says Amanda has blossomed.

“Now? She’s like 'Miss Social Butterfly.' She talks to everybody, she’s volunteering, she’s doing this, she’s doing that, she’s all over the place,” said Anita Espana, who’s been teaching Amanda since 9^th grade. “It’s great, it’s very rewarding.”

Amanda is also a cheerleader. So just by example, she has changed perceptions among her classmates and erased stereotypes about what disabled kids can do.

“Anyone can look up to someone like Amanda, and you can look up to anyone, it’s really amazing to see the change that one person can bring,” said Kayla Spennato, one of Amanda’s cheerleading teammates.

To understand why Amanda inspires her friends, it’s helpful to know her history. She didn’t learn to speak until she was in about the fifth grade.

“She’s broken so many boundaries that I could never, ever dream of, and she’s achieved that all with just a smile,” said Erica Hoy, a 10^th grader and Amanda’s sister.

Amanda has severe epilepsy. As a child, it impacted her cognitive and motor skill development. She’s been playing catch-up ever since, often with Erica nearby.

“Even though she’s older than me, I’m the big sister in our relationship, I look out for her,” Erica said. “But to hear of other people talking about her, how they’ve affected her and how she’s changed them, it’s just so heartwarming.”

“Very confident, very confident,” Amanda said when I asked her about school.

She’s confident in her abilities, even if she has trouble fully expressing herself. Amanda is a work in progress, an example of courage and resilience.

COOPER CITY, Fla. – Rabbits are over-running one Broward County neighborhood, but these are no wild hares.

They’re actually pets being dumped in one particular area that has become known as a bunny haven for these unwanted pets.

“See all the bite wounds all over his ears, being bullied by the ones that are actually here? She said someone came, threw him out of the car and drove away,” one woman said.

The bunny borough is taking over the suburbs of Cooper City.

“Over the years, the population has grown. Fortunately our neighborhood is wonderful, everybody feeds them, we give them water. You know, we do the best we can,” Maria Cormany, who lives nearby, said.

“Everyone cares for the bunnies,” another neighbor, Rachel Alvarez, added.

The neighbors leave water and fresh vegetables out for the bunnies.

“She’s been around, I would say, for at least five years,” Cormany said of one bunny.

The rabbit colony lives at the Flamingo Gardens neighborhood among houses, humans, ducks and even dogs.

These bunnies are everywhere in this neighborhood.

And since it’s just after Easter, people out there might have invested in a pet that they weren’t really prepared for

But these are domestics dumped there, left to fend for themselves, and the bottom line is they’re pets, not wild animals.

“A lot of them are quite sick because they’re not meant to be outside,” said Dylan Warfel, with Penny & Wild Small Animal Rescue.

Warfel comes out continuously, rescuing rabbits and saving bunnies.

“You have bite wounds, you’re matted, that’s a massive flea, covered in fleas,” he said about the bunnies.

But considering these munchkins make babies every 30 days, it is a never-ending operation.

“Right now, we’re looking for foster homes,” Warfel said. “We are a 100 percent foster-based rescue, so we don’t have a shelter facility to put them in, but each person that steps up to foster, we’re able to pick up another here, get them into safety, get them fixed and adopted out.”

A major late-season winter storm continues to impact the Rockies and parts of the High Plains into the start of the work week. It will bring heavy snow, extremely high winds and blizzard conditions.

A surface low pressure system will drift across the north-central U.S. through Monday morning. The storm will pack quite a punch initially, with heavy snowfall and high winds for the Front Range and northern/central High Plains. However, the low pressure will gradually weaken and lose its pep as time goes on.

Moderate to heavy snow will occur throughout southeastern Montana, most of eastern Wyoming and western portions of South Dakota and Nebraska today. This will then taper to briefly moderate snow tonight and Monday morning, with snow possibly mixing with or even changing over to rain Monday afternoon. Any precipitation should end by Monday evening.

Light snow will be likely across western and the rest of southern Montana into northern Wyoming today. Otherwise, expect flurries or light snow showers for the rest of the northern/central Rockies. Some light snow will also be in the forecast for northern South Dakota, southern North Dakota and Minnesota today.

Total snowfall amounts will generally range from 6 to 12 inches for southeastern Montana and eastern Wyoming into southwestern South Dakota and the Nebraska Panhandle. Though, higher amounts of 16 to 24 inches will be possible in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains. Expect mainly 3 to 6 inches in western/southern Montana, northern Wyoming, northern South Dakota, southern North Dakota and Minnesota.

Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for central and southeastern Montana, eastern Wyoming, and the Nebraska Panhandle.

In addition to the snowfall, high winds will also accompany this low pressure system. The strongest winds will occur through late this afternoon for areas just south of the moderate to heavy snow. Sustained winds will range from 30 to 50 mph for southeastern Wyoming, eastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico into southern Nebraska and northwestern Kansas. Expect wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph as well, though gusts of 80 to 100 mph will be found along the Colorado Front Range!

High Wind Warnings have been posted along the Front Range into the central High Plains. A Wind Advisory also stretches across north-central Kansas.
