Video provided to News 6 shows what appears to be a black bear leaning against a table in the home’s front yard, helping itself to a spread of pumpkins and Halloween candy.

From out of the crowd observing the bear, children can be heard commenting on the wild animal’s poor table manners.

News 6 earlier in October reported on what Seminole County commissioners called a significant decrease in bear-related calls for service that’s been attributed to the county’s advocacy for bear-resistant trash cans.

“They’ve gone from No. 1 or 2 number of calls for all of our 67 counties, down to No. 7,” said Mike Orlando, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Bear Program coordinator.

It remains unclear at the time of this report whether FWC was called to confront the candy-consuming bear.

In general, you’re advised to not approach a bear should you ever see one this close. Contact the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) if you feel threatened by a bear, if you observe a sick, injured, dead or orphaned bear, or to report someone who is either harming bears or intentionally feeding them.

BNY Mellon Announces Major Expansion in Orlando’s Lake Mary

Growing its presence in the Orlando region, BNY Mellon (NYSE:BK) announces a substantial expansion of its real estate footprint in Lake Mary. The company plans to make considerable investments in the creation of a unified campus across two locations, creating a significant number of new jobs for the region.“Lake Mary is an important location for us globally, and we believe in the local community and its top talent,” said Alejandro Pérez...

The project expands BNY Mellon’s Lake Mary location by 200,000 square feet, which includes cutting-edge office space at 600 Colonial Center Parkway and the renovation of an additional 100,000 square feet at 300 Colonial Center Parkway.

Complementing the physical expansion, BNY Mellon aims to transform the working environment for its staff with collaborative workspaces, a full-service cafeteria, a state-of-the-art conference center, a premium coffee bar, and wellness facilities that include a gym and dedicated spaces for nursing mothers. The comprehensive renovation project is set to be completed by 2024.

Florida Commerce played a pivotal role in facilitating this expansion, emphasizing our region’s commitment to supporting business growth. The move not only creates job opportunities but also injects economic vitality into the state.

BNY Mellon established its presence in Lake Mary in 2001 and has since increased its presence in the region to approximately 1,200 employees. The company also has several Wealth Management branches throughout Florida.

The Orlando Economic Partnership (OEP) first engaged with BNY Mellon senior bank officials during a 2022 economic development mission to New York. Following discussions centered on opportunities for BNY Mellon to expand its existing facility in Lake Mary, the OEP’s economic development team provided comprehensive research, market analysis and incentives counsel to make the business case for the region.

YMCA of Central Florida has put the J. Douglas Williams YMCA Family Center on the market for either a purchase, a sale with a partial leaseback or a joint development. The property at 665 Longwood Lake Mary Road includes a 24,941-square-foot building and outdoor swimming pool on 7.7 acres.

The facility is not under contract and remains fully operational, Cathy Paez, chief financial officer for the YMCA of Central Florida, told the Orlando Business Journal. "The Y is taking necessary steps to recover from the severe impacts of the pandemic while seeking to continue meeting the evolving needs of the community."

The nonprofit reported $39.9 million in revenue during 2022, compared to $63.39 million in 2019.

It plans to sell a closed location in the Eastbrook neighborhood in Winter Park as well. Matt Messier and Carlin Beekman with Foundry Commercial are advertising both properties for the YMCA, with the Winter Park site having a listed price of $2 million and the Lake Mary site's price unlisted.

The Lake Mary YMCA was built in 1996 and went through a $1 million renovation in 2019.

Other YMCA real estate changes include a leased one in Avalon Park that closed in October this year. The Blanchard Park YMCA in Orlando has been temporarily closed due to flooding from Hurricane Ian.

On the flip side, the nonprofit opened the $17 million-plus, two-story, 35,000-square-foot Leonard & Marjorie Williams Family YMCA at 2178 Packing District Way earlier this year.

Meanwhile, some potential developers have already made proposals at the Lake Mary site. Edson Urubatan in a pre-application item to the Seminole County Development Review Committee floated the idea of a new school using the existing buildings.

The school would serve pre-school and elementary students and have capacity for up to 400. Urubatan was not immediately available.
